→ Apparently, I can't stay away from the art sites for long. :| Since this is cutting into my regular recs a lot, but I still spend a ton of time recommending stuff, I've decided that, for my own sanity, I am going to count each of these posts as 10 to 15 recs towards my total year-long count, depending on the size of any given one. Don't judge me. :|

Wahahaa. This post has been long in making. And I need to go eat dinner but will be back (and online!!111) later.

Bleach, FMA, Soul Eater, and the AWESOMENESS thereof )

Dump dump dump. When I said I've been consuming trashy shoujo like crazy (for destressing purposes), I meant it.... Anyway I'll only blab about the ones I liked, and things longer than one-shots. The first being my favorite, the rest not in order.

1. The Scarlet Chair/Hiiro no Isu (9/10 chapters scanlated):

"This village where her loneliness lingers is like a thorn in my eyes."

By Midorikawa Yuki of Natsume Yuujinchou fame. Like the anime, I find her stuff sometimes a little hit or miss, though when it works it REALLY works and even when it doesn't it's pretty good. (Notable one-shot: Hotarubi no Mori E, from the collection of the same title.) But The Scarlet Chair -- I cannot recommend this enough.

First of all, unlike her other stuff, which features modern-day schoolkids even in her plots with a more fantastical bent, this one is straight-up fantasy. Now, imagine her usual nostalgic/bittersweet slice-of-life atmosphere superimposed on a political intrigue plot in a low fantasy setting (i.e. no magic). With a (voluntarily) crossdressing heroine. (Plus one brief instance of a crossdressing guy. XD) And badass swordswomen! (Plus one noble lady who is very much a typical noblewoman and yet just as sympathetic as the action!women.)

Premise: heroine grows up with her childhood friend in a village until one day someone comes along and reveals that he's the bastard son of the king (and thus last remaining heir to the throne), and takes him away to the capital. Five years later, she journeys to the capital to see him... only to find that the young man who's taken up the throne is another person entirely.

Nothing is as it seems. The truth is hidden behind layers and layers of memories; meanwhile, political troubles continue to simmer in the present day. The utilization of flashback and perspective is amazing: everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING) weaves together naturally as new revelations set previous revelations in a different light -- like looking at the same scene from different angles, sometimes enhancing our (and the characters') previous understanding, sometimes contradicting it. And the lovely delicately simplistic art (tangent: the costume designs/background architecture are really subtle and pretty, I'd loooove to see more of this stuff in color) really enhances that whole sense of nostalgia, the play of light and shadow and memory, the fragility and complexity of human relationships, those quiet, poignant moments where one or more characters' quiet realization suddenly shifts the dynamics in a very subtle manner.... And then everything blows up, spectacularly, as the pieces begin falling into place.

I'm just so annoyed that I can't find raws for the last chapter. Raargh. (I just know the ending's gonna break my heart. Starting with Chapter 8 it's just been baawwww.) Oh well, rereading the rest of it is well worth it. I'm just seriously impressed by all the hints and foreshadowing and the little throwaway details. And Midorikawa's notes make for an interesting read too.

big long list + reflections on finishing Chrno Crusade at long last )

Anime: Not caught up. (Rideback is still #1 of everything I've seen this year.) I have seen some good comments re: Bakemonogatari and CANAAN, but honestly don't really care (especially the latter, as it's a game tie-in/sequel). I've got too much stuff backlogged. Someone else tell me if they're worth watching.

As for Aoi Hana/Sweet Blue Flowers (ANN, wiki), I'm just going to copy and paste what I wrote last time:

shoujo-ai (i.e. femmeslash) slice-of-life high school story with literary references galore. I love the manga, but I'm actually surprised this is getting animated. Seems like an odd choice -- isn't the same mangaka's Hourou Musuko (also about transexuality and gender identity, etc.) more popular/well-known? But I guess (adorable!) crossdressing boys going through puberty don't sell as well to a mainstream audience as lesbian schoolgirls. More seriously though, it's a quiet, pretty series featuring characters at various places on the sliding scale of sexuality. Nuanced and engaging. I'm just not sure it's a good series to animate though, as it's just so... quiet. So if it doesn't do the manga justice, then I'm dropping. But it's J.C. Staff, who did Honey and Clover, so maybe it'll be okay.

Crunchyroll picked this up, much to my surprise. Also to my surprise, the subs/video quality are actually pretty good this time around. (I still don't like streaming stuff though, so still torrented the file...) And ah, looks like this is going to be worth it. The animation is fluid and gorgeous, as are the character designs. And the watercolor backgrounds! (My weakness for watercolor knows no bounds.) SOOOO PRETTY. Only complaint really is the voices -- not bad, but hmm. Maybe they'll grow on me.

Anyway I HIGHLY rec this even if you're not into shoujo-ai -- lots to love about this series even without that. And unlike most of the other big name shoujo-ai/yuri stuff that's been put out in recent years, this one's not fanservice and/or catering to drooling fanboys, and the attention to realism is quite charming. So yeah. Between this and Spice and Wolf, my summer season is set. (Well, with the possible addition of Tokyo Magnitude 8, but even if I'm a BONES fangirl, natural disaster plots are usually not my cup of tea.)

on gaming, Earthbound, demented hippies, and obsessive-compulsive police roadblocks )

And just to prove that my life does not consist of animanga and gaming alone... (books! mostly nonfiction!) )

- I'm taking driving lessons, and I had an Unfortunate moment. No, not in the way you'd expect in a driving class.

I was on a main avenue for the first time, excitedly nervous about staying in my lane, not hitting other cars, and not running over people. Good times. It was dark, raining lightly, and I noticed that a white woman was considering crossing the street. "Not a good idea, with me on the road!" I exclaimed. She didn't pass, I didn't hit her, and all was well.

A few meters later, a black man started to cross the road. "Oh, look, another reckless person!"

"He's not a person," my instructor said. "He's negro."

Uhhhhhhhhhhh.

It's not that, as far as I know, "negro" is an offensive way to refer to black people. It's the fact that he explicitly said that the black person wasn't a person. I've seen this done subconsciously all the time. On the news, if it's a white person who's committed a crime, people will say, "A teenaged boy killed his brother!" If it's a black person, always always always always always, they'll be referred to as such. "A negro killed his brother!" Why the differentiation? Why do you say, "What an ugly negro," when you wouldn't say, "What an ugly branco?"

A moment passed, with me trying to figure if I had enough concentration in me not to crash the car and get started a "wtf is that supposed to mean, consider what you just said!" discussion. He then asked me, "You don't have any negros in your family, right? No? Oh, it's okay, then."

"No, it's not," I said. Trying to keep the car in order, I wasn't able to launch into an explanation of the importance of language and the prejudice embedded in words like I wished to. Even so, from the way he'd asked if there was anyone black in my family, he knew he was crossing a line.

Didn't you know? There's no racism in Brazil. Nope, none at all.

- I finished Sula. The second half, which focused more on romantic betrayals and destroyed friendships, wasn't nearly as difficult for me as the first half, because I know what to expect from that kind of story. No suffering I haven't read before. It was the random, meaningless violence that affected me.

Excellent book on the whole, and if you want a powerful read, I highly recommend it.

I loved the language above all. I read and reread passages, soaking up her narrative. I continue to be in awe of Toni Morrison's writing. There are passages I'd like to keep with me, and I have typed up some of them here. I doubt they have same power isolated as they do within the story, but... what else can I do?

Quotes. Spoilers for the whole book. )

Hah, got home and found an email informing me I had been removed as a moderator for [info]fissionmailed. o_0 Oh well, I hadn't been able to post much lately, so I can see where people might have thought I was leaving the comm.

Dad came on "surprise visit" to town. I'm apathetic but not antagonistic. It's usually around July/August that his guilt complex kicks in and he makes the yearly visit to make play at parenting. My brother's finally put his foot down and staunchly refuses to speak to him anymore, so that leaves my sister and I to entertain my father until he leaves Monday. Too bad this is my weekend to work? :-/ It normally wouldn't be an issue, but we've opened up four new units in the hospital, and we're completely understaffed to handle the work load, so everyone's just overwhelmed. I have literally spent the past two weeks working, going to the gym, and sleeping, and outside of seeing [info]gilhamilton and Megan on Sunday, that's it. I am seriously beat.

Other than that, have been completely unmotivated to do much of anything. I really need to get back into school. While the academic challenge was murderous when it vied with work, it still got me up and moving and thinking about things. :( I miss it.

..........that is all I have to say in this update. MY LIFE IS EL BORING LATELY.
